Chords 101 - Week 5

9th Chords

The dominant 9 chord has all the same notes as the dominant 7, only it also adds the ninth. The 9 is called a tension.

Moving the same shape from  to  yields an A minor chord. The quality of this interim voicing isn't particularly important. We're trying to get the same sound to transfer from one string set to another.
To re-establish the original chord sound, we’ll need to move the note on the second string up one fret (from ‘C’ to ‘C#’).

So, here are the steps in moving a voicing across the fretboard from one string set to the next
  1. Move the voices from the lower strings to the higher strings, retaining the shape.
  2. Move any note now found on the second string up a half-step to recapture the quality of the original chord.
  3. Move the voicing down five frets to find the same bottom note as found on the original voicing. If you "run out of neck" in the lower positions, just find the same note on the higher string.  Emaj7 can be played on the 7th fret 5,4,3,2 or 2nd fret, 4,3,2,1;  7-2= down 5 frets
